Parent Association

There are many ways that parents can be involved in the life of the school. We value and welcome the involvement of RIDN’s diverse community, and as a parent, you are automatically a member of the Parents Association. The PA’s goals are to build a strong sense of community among parents and to support the important work of the school. Family members are also encouraged to visit their child’s classroom to read or tell a story, cook a special dish or teach a special song, or enrich us all by sharing important aspects of their culture or heritage.

There are many opportunities for parents to volunteer their time and talents. Each class has a designated Class Parent who works to develop a sense of community on a class level. Throughout the year, RIDN also participates in events that involve the larger Roosevelt Island community, including the Fall for the Arts Festival and Roosevelt Island Day, and parent participation is crucial to making these events a success.

As well, the PA plans and hosts many events throughout the year to build and strengthen the RIDN community including:

Family Gatherings A school picnic, pancake breakfast, book fair and fall and winter music concerts are just a few of the events the PA plans for the entire family to attend.

Parent Education Workshops Several times a year, the PA hosts presentations or discussion groups on varied topics of interest to parents. These workshops are often facilitated by local experts or well-respected early childhood educators.

Spring Fling A family favorite and open to the whole Island community, this is a fun-filled day of games for children, wonderful food, and music.

Parents-Only Events Each year, the school-wide “Welcome Back Cocktail Party” provides the perfect opportunity to see old friends and meet the new families in the community. Other ‘night-out’ opportunities for parents are also planned throughout the year. The Annual Winter Benefit, the school’s largest fundraiser, is a popular evening for all.
